Consistent verbal labels promote odor category learning

چکیده
Recent research shows that speakers of most languages find smells difficult to abstract and name. Can verbal labels enhance the human capacity learn smell categories? Few studies have examined how labeling might affect non-visual cognitive processes, thus far very little is known about word-assisted odor category learning. To address these gaps, we tested whether different types training change learning gains in categorization. After four intensive days categorize odors were co-presented with arbitrary labels, people who learned categories odor-label pairs more consistent significantly accurate than same perceptual experience but had less consistent. Both groups' accuracy scores improved, curves differed. The context linguistic cuing supported an increase correct responses from third day training. However, inconsistent delayed start approximating target categorization until after fourth day. These results show associations formed between novel facilitate formation categories. We interpret this as showing a causal link language olfactory processing supporting

Exploring the role of verbal category labels in flexible cognition
Research under the paradigm of the label feedback hypothesis has proposed a causal role for verbal labels in the online learning and processing of categories. Labeled categories are learned faster, and are subsequently more robust. The present study extends this research paradigm by considering the relationship between verbal labels and flexible categorization. Flexibility is a key trait of hum...
متن کاملThe effect of newly trained verbal and nonverbal labels for the cues in probabilistic category learning.
Learning in a well-established paradigm of probabilistic category learning, the weather prediction task, has been assumed to be mediated by a variety of strategies reflecting explicit learning processes, such as hypothesis testing, when it is administered to young healthy participants. Higher categorization accuracy has been observed in the task when explicit processes are facilitated. We hypot...
متن کاملCategory labels versus feature labels: category labels polarize inferential predictions.
What makes category labels different from feature labels in predictive inference? This study suggests that category labels tend to make inductive reasoning polarized and homogeneous. In two experiments, participants were shown two schematic pictures of insects side by side and predicted the value of a hidden feature of one insect on the basis of the other insect. Arbitrary verbal labels were sh...
متن کاملImpaired verbal category learning in amnesia.
Amnesic patients and controls listened to verbal descriptions of imaginary animals and then classified novel descriptions according to whether they belonged to the studied category. Controls performed well, but the amnesic patients did not acquire categorical knowledge. These findings contrast with previous demonstrations of intact category learning by amnesic patients for dot patterns, artific...
متن کاملCategory Discontinuity Interacts with Verbal Rule Complexity 1 Within-Category Discontinuity Interacts with Verbal Rule Complexity in Perceptual Category Learning
Two experiments were conducted that provide a test of the predicted interaction between within-category discontinuity and verbal rule complexity on the efficiency of the neurobiologically-motivated procedural-based and hypothesis-testing category learning systems, and by extension, on information-integration and rule-based category learning. In Experiment 1, within-category discontinuity advers...
